We Need To Talk About Cannes

The 64th annual Cannes Film Festival is taking place from 11th-22nd May 2011.

As part of this year’s Official Selection, 19 films will screen ‘In Competition’ for the prestigious Palme d’Or. Amongst them is We Need To Talk About Kevin, starring TILDA SWINTON.

We Need To Talk About Kevin is an adaptation of Lionel Shriver‘s prize-winning book of the same name. Directed and co-written by Lynne Ramsay, this powerful and controversial film tells the story of Eva (TILDA SWINTON), a mother who puts her ambitions and career on hold to give birth to her son, Kevin. The relationship between mother and son is difficult from the very beginning but when Kevin is 15, he commits an irrational and unforgivable crime, leaving Eva to grapple with her own feelings of grief and responsibility as she is forced to question whether she ever loved her son and how much she is to blame for what he did.

We Need To Talk About Kevin screens at Cannes on May 12th at 10pm.

Midnight In Paris, the new film by Woody Allen, will open this year’s festival on May 11th.

The romantic comedy, shot last year in the French capital, is Allen’s love letter to the city and brings together a broad international cast, including Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and TOM HIDDLESTON (below, left). The film is not in competition, but the opening slot at Cannes will mark its world premiere.
