‘What if Shakespeare never wrote anything at all?’ This is the question posed by director Roland Emmerich’s brand new historical thriller. Set during the Essex Rebellion at the end of the long reign of Elizabeth I, when factions struggled over the succession, Anonymous explores the long-discussed theory that another man, Edward De Vere, Earl of Oxford (played by Rhys Ifans), wrote all of the great works credited to William Shakespeare.
EDWARD HOGG plays the queen’s unsympathetic and conniving counselor Robert Cecil and MARK RYLANCE plays Shakespeare’s contemporary and fellow member of Lord Chamberlain’s Men, Henry Condell. TOM WLASCHIHA also makes an appearance as Captain Of The Guard. Other players in this stellar cast include Rhys Ifans, David Thewlis, Joely Richardson, Vanessa Redgrave and Derek Jacobi.
