Coalition is a brilliant new 90-minute drama written by James Graham and starring HH client BERTIE CARVEL as the UK’s Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. It airs next Saturday 28th March at 9pm on Channel 4.
Coalition charts Clegg’s rise in popularity ahead of the 2010 General Election and the subsequent forming of a coalition government by the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats, imagining what happened in the corridors of Wesminster in the days following the election and telling the story of Clegg’s astonishing rise from rank outsider to the heart of government. The drama, which has already received excellent reviews in The Guardian and The Independent (5*), also stars Mark Dexter as David Cameron, Ian Grieve as Gordon Brown and Mark Gatiss as Labour Party politician Peter Mandelson.
Talking to journalists after a screening, BERTIE described Coalition as “meticulously researched”, saying that whilst a lot of the dialogue is imagined, “in terms of events, they’re chronicled – a lot of them are in the public domain.” On being asked how it felt to play the UK’s Deputy Prime Minister, BERTIE went on to explain how it was initially “daunting…playing people who are so high-profile…but the minute you divest yourself of that daunting responsibility and just try to serve the play that James has written…we just made it our own.”
