Having steadily picked up Academy Award traction in recent weeks, Austrian arthouse horror thriller Goodnight Mommy, starring HH client SUSANNE WUEST, is set to be this year’s Austrian Oscars entry. The film cleared the $1M mark this week after a seven-weekend run, becoming only the eighth foreign-language title to do so this year, with The Academy screening it for members on Halloween last weekend. We’re keeping everything crossed that it makes it to the Best Foreign Film shortlist!
An atmospheric, nerve-straining chiller co-directed by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, Goodnight Mommy (German title Ich Seh, Ich Seh) tells the story of two 10-year-old identical twins whose mother (played by SUSANNE) returns home grotesquely swathed in bandages after plastic surgery. Confined to an isolated country house, the boys begin to transform their resentment towards their mother into a fatal illusion about her identity.
Goodnight Mommy world premiered to immediate acclaim at Venice Film Festival last year before playing Toronto’s ‘Vanguard’ category for its North American premiere. The Washington Post’s Michael O’Sullivan observed that the look of the film is “gorgeous,” further propped by its “deliberate pacing and mundane, shock-free plotting” and buttoned up with a twist that will make viewers want to watch it all over again. Furthermore, Goodnight Mommy showed some awards traction a few days ago when its DP Martin Gschlacht won at the European Film Awards.
Fingers crossed for the upcoming awards season! Here’s the creepy trailer:
